Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley gives keynote address highlighting Irish culture in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, RI
– Providence City Hall came alive with the sounds of traditional Irish music and dance today when Mayor Angel Taveras hosted the city's annual Saint Patrick's Day celebration on the second and third floors of City Hall.

"Today we recognize the contributions of Irish Americans to the rich history of our city, state, and nation," said Mayor Taveras. "Providence's annual St. Patrick's Day celebration is evidence that Irish heritage and culture is alive and well in our city."

Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, the guest speaker at today's formal celebration, led the invocation and highlighted the rich traditions of the Irish in Rhode Island in his address.

During the ceremony, Mayor Taveras delivered a Mayoral Citation to the Providence St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee. The afternoon also included a bagpipe procession by the Providence Police Department Pipes and Drums and concluded with an Irish step dance performance by the Goulding School of Irish Dance.
