Mayor Taveras honors Italian American traditions at annual ceremony

PROVIDENCE, RI
– The sounds of traditional Italian songs echoed inside the halls of Providence City Hall today, when Mayor Angel Taveras hosted the City's annual Saint Joseph's Day celebration on the third floor of City Hall.

In his address, Mayor Taveras recognized the contributions of the many Italian Americans who have been an important part of the history of Providence.

"Today we recognize the contributions of the generations of Italians who have settled in Providence and throughout Rhode Island in search of a better life," said Mayor Taveras. "Italian Americans continue to make an indelible and lasting contribution to our economic strength and cultural vitality in Providence and across our nation."

The Honorable Daniel Procaccini, an associate justice of Rhode Island Superior Court, was the keynote speaker of the St. Joseph's Day program. Rev. Alfred C. Lonardo delivered the invocation and there were musical performances by guitarist Joseph Simeone and the Esek Hopkins School Italian Chorus.
