Celebrating Ireland in Music, Song & Dance at Providence Public Library Sunday, March 15

PROVIDENCE, RI
– Providence Public Library (150 Empire Street, Providence) will celebrate Ireland and Irish Culture on Sunday, March 15 beginning at 1:30 pm with back–to-back music and dance programs.  Both programs are free and open to the public.

Celebrate Ireland in Story and Song: 1:30 – 2:30 pm, Grand Hall (1st floor)

Join us for a lively and authentic program embracing Irish history and culture in story and song with three well-known local musicians, Mary King, Phil Edmonds, and special guest performer, Dan Lanier, for music, songs and funny stories of Ireland.

The program highlights music that includes the Celtic harp, fiddle, guitar, tin whistle and button accordion; traditional Irish songs and step dance lessons with Mary King. Come and enjoy an afternoon of lively jigs & reels, heartfelt songs and plenty of blarney to keep you laughing!

Phil Edmonds, a native of Killaloe, Country Clare, Ireland, and who learned to play the tin whistle in a place where he says: “The backyard was the fields.” When he was 14 years old, his family emigrated to America and settled in South Providence where he still lives. Along with his tin whistle, Phil plays button accordion with great warmth and spirit.

Both of Mary King's parents are from Ireland and she was raised in that culture, taking Irish step dance lessons by age 4 and listening to her mother sing the songs of Donegal where she was born. Mary keeps the tradition of Irish music alive with the Celtic harp and her fiddle.

Irish Dance: 3:00 – 4:30 pm, Grand Hall (1st floor)

Coventry's Kelly School of Irish Dance (KSID) brings their award-winning performance of both modern and traditional Irish step dancing to Providence Public Library!  Under the direction of studio owner, Meghan Kelly, the KSID dancers smile, sparkle & shine and truly love to dance & perform. The school is a proud member of The North American Irish Dance Federation.
