Raimondo Nominates William Foulkes to the Board of Education
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Governor Gina M. Raimondo Friday announced her intent to nominate William Foulkes to the Board of Education. She will submit his name for consideration to the Rhode Island State Senate for confirmation next week. If confirmed, Mr. Foulkes would serve on the Postsecondary Council.
"Preparing our students to succeed in a 21st century economy is one of the smartest investments we can make," said Raimondo. "Bill's leadership at the Rhode Island School of Design and in the community will make him a strong advocate for our state's higher education system."
"I believe we have a strong representative for higher education in Bill Foulkes," said Board Chair Barbara Cottam. "His experience building partnerships between businesses and educational institutions will help us strengthen and develop paths that provide opportunities for students to secure jobs."
"I am grateful to the Governor for this opportunity to serve our state and our students," said Bill Foulkes. "I look forward to getting to work with the Board of Education to invest in our young people and drive our economy."
This nomination is replacing Jim Karam, who has requested his name be withdrawn from consideration for the Board of Education.
"Earlier this week, Jim asked me to withdraw his name from consideration for the Board of Education," said Raimondo. "Jim brings extensive experience from his work as a former Chair of the Board of the University of Massachusetts and I know he would have done a great job, but I respect his decision and I appreciate his openness about his time commitments."
"I was honored to be considered for this position, especially knowing the Governor's focus on advancing public higher education within our state," said Karam. "But after much deliberation about my work obligations, it became clear to me that I could not dedicate the time and effort I believe is necessary to adequately serve the aggressive and forward-thinking plans that the Governor and the General Assembly envision. It is with great regret that I requested the Governor withdraw my nomination."
Bill Foulkes is a strategic planning and marketing consultant, and currently a faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design where he teaches entrepreneurship and business. Foulkes holds an A.B. in History from Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
