Remembering Rocky Point Park at Cranston Public Library

Remembering Rocky Point Park at Cranston Public Library

On Wednesday, August 26, Cranston Public Library will host a discussion of one of Rhode Island's favorite historical topics: Rocky Point Park. David Bettencourt, author of the book Rocky Point Park, will lead the presentation, reviewing the park's history before giving the floor to the audience for an open discussion about the park and the memories made there.

Rocky Point Park was an amusement park located in Warwick, RI. The park was in operation from the mid-1800s through 1995 and drew crowds from across the region. The land that was once home to the park is now owned by the State of Rhode Island and has been transformed into a state park.

The book Rocky Point Park is an installment of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of Modern America series. This series is dedicated to chronicling American history from the 1950s to the present.

Author David Bettencourt is a Rhode Island native who grew up in Harrisville and spent many childhood days at Rocky Point Park. Bettencourt shot and directed the documentary You Must Be This Tall: The Story of Rocky Point Park, an 82-minute film which showed in cinemas throughout New England, aired on PBS and is currently available for viewing on YouTube.

This free event will begin at 6:30 pm at the Central Library, located at 140 Sockanosset Cross Rd, Cranston RI. Copies of Rocky Point Park will be available for purchase at the event thanks to Barnes and Noble.
