PROVIDENCE, RI – A traditional Italian holiday arrived a day early as Mayor Jorge O. Elorza hosted the City’s annual St. Joseph’s Day celebration in Providence City Hall Friday.

“Italian-Americans have had a significant role in shaping Providence,” said Mayor Elorza. “We are proud to celebrate the rich heritage and countless contributions members of the Italo-American community have brought to the City of Providence.”
Mayor Elorza hosted the celebration, which included a musical performance by Dominic Di Pasquale. Father Vincent Lonardo delivered the invocation, and Business Manager and Secretary-Treasurer of the Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council, Michael Sabitoni, delivered the keynote address.

Members of the Providence State Delegation and City Council served as honorary co-chairs for the celebration.  Senators Ruggerio and Ciccone joined Representatives DeSimone, Carnevale, Lima, Lombardi and Palangio as well as City Councilors Correia, Igliozzi, Narducci, Principe and Salvatore as honorary co-chairs.

The celebration concluded with a special reception in Council Chambers which offered zeppoles and other refreshments to those in attendance.
