Red Sox trade Buchholz to Phillies

The Red Sox have traded pitcher Clay Buchholz to the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league infielder Josh Tobias.  CBS Sports was first to report the trade.

With the trade, Boston trims $13 million off its payroll for the 2017 season.  The move also slims down the log jam at starting pitching with Chris Sale, David Price, Rick Porcello, Eduardo Rodriguez, Drew Pomeranz and Steven Wright now fighting for five spots in the rotation.

Buchholz, 32, was 81-61 record to go with a 3.96 ERA in 206 games with the Red Sox, including going 8-10 with a 4.78 ERA in 2016.  Tobias, 24, played second base and hit .301 in two minor league season in the Phillies system.
