Patriots trade for Saints WR Cooks
The Patriots did trade for Saints WR Brandin Cooks Friday, but they didn't have to give up CB Malcolm Butler to get him. New England gets Cooks and the Saints 4th round pick in exchange for the Patriots first round pick (32nd overall pick) and a third-round pick. Diana Russini of ESPN was first to report the deal.
Cooks caught 78 passes for 1,173 yards and 6 TD's in 2016. He's just 23 and is under team control for two seasons.
Butler, who hasn't signed his $3.9 contract tender yet, can't be involved in a trade until he signs that tender. A deal could come later for Butler or the Patriots could just decide to keep the cornerback.
