Mayor Elorza to Host Earth Day Activities in Providence

Fifth annual Earth Day celebration and spring clean-up program to take place Saturday, April 22

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza Thursday announced that the City of Providence will be hosting its fifth annual city-wide celebration of Earth Day on Saturday, April 22, 2017. Earth Day activities are dedicated to cleaning up green spaces and neighborhoods and celebrating the community groups that make Providence’s public spaces vibrant.  

“Every great city has great public spaces. Because of that, Providence has invested $3.5 million in major upgrades over the past 2 years to our city parks,” said Mayor Elorza “This Earth Day, I invite residents to join us in celebrating, enjoying, and preserving our parks.” 

Residents are invited to join Mayor Elorza to kick off the Earth Day activities at the Roger Williams Park Boathouse on Saturday, at 8:30am. They are also encouraged to participate in a morning of volunteer community improvement events taking place from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Those interested in signing up and joining one of 50+ sites to clean a park, plant trees or beautify a neighborhood can register at www.ServeRhodeIsland.org. 

Volunteers who show their “I volunteered at Earth Day Spring Cleaning 2017” buttons will receive free admission to most venues in Roger Williams Park, discounts at select area businesses, free rides to Roger Williams Park through Uber, free rides on Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA) buses,  and more.

Providence Earth Day Spring Cleaning 2017 is planned in collaboration with the Partnership for Providence Parks, Serve Rhode Island, the Department of Parks, Office of Sustainability, Department of Public Works, Roger Williams Park Conservancy, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College Friars United for Service in Our Neighborhoods (FUSION), Providence Parks Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership, CVS Caremark, and will highlight the important role that volunteer groups have in making the City’s parks and neighborhoods great places to play, relax and explore. 

Schnitzer Steel is presenting the event and the premier sponsors include UBER, RIPTA, and 95.5 WBRU as well as additional support from UNO Pizzeria & Grill, Whole Foods, Roger Williams Park Zoo, Knead Donuts, Flatbread Company, Seven Stars Bakery, and the Duck and Bunny.
