Red Sox designate Pablo Sandoval for assignment
The Red Sox have designated third baseman Pablo Sandoval for assignment Friday. Sandoval had been on the disabled list and playing on a rehab at Pawtucket. The team made the announcement public via their website Friday morning.
The team activated him from the disabled list Friday and DFA'd him. Boston is still on the hook for the remainder of his five-year, $95 million dollar deal that he's roughly halfway through. Devon Marrero and Tzu-Wei Lin have been playing the position in Sandoval's absence.
Sandoval is hitting just .212 this season with 4 HR 12 RBI in 32 games after playing only three games in 2016. In 3 years with Boston, Sandoval played only 161 games, hitting .237 with 14 HR and 59 RBI.
The Red Sox also promoted prized 3B prospect Rafael Devers to AAA Pawtucket Friday as well.
