ONE Neighborhood Builders To celebrate completion and sale of Audrey Street Initiative

ONE Neighborhood Builders To Celebrate the Completion and Sale of the 3rd (and final) Affordable Home in the Audrey Street Initiative!

On Monday, July 24th, ONE Neighborhood Builders will celebrate the completion of three affordable homes in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 21 Audrey Street, the final home to be constructed and sold.

Constructed based on a slightly modified version of an award-winning design by KITE Architects, the Audrey Street homes feature green materials and system choices that increase operating efficiency and lower housing costs for their owners.

Another innovative aspect of this project is ONE|NB's partnership with Building Futures.  Building Futures’ pre-apprentice program constructed the homes as a community based elective training in carpentry.  As a result, participants gained practical experience and substantially reduced costs to ONE|NB.

The largest source of funding for Audrey Street was HUD’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program, established to provide emergency assistance to stabilize communities with high rates of abandoned and foreclosed homes.  The City of Providence administered these funds and also provided HOME funds to the project.

Additional funding was provided by Building Homes RI (BHRI), a program established by the state’s Housing Resources Commission and administered by RIHousing to distribute Rhode Island’s housing bond for the construction and preservation of affordable housing.  RIHousing and TD Bank provided critical acquisition financing.

Speakers at the event on Monday will include: Michael Tondra, RI Chief of Housing and Community Development; Amy Rainone, Director of Government Relations and Policy, RIHousing; Scott R. Jensen, Director, RI Department of Labor & Training and Providence City Council Acting President Sabina Matos.

New homeowner, Georgina Cabreja will share her experience as a first-time homebuyer, and Kim Battersby, Building Futures graduate, will speak about her work on the project.

ONE Neighborhood Builders promotes equity, community health and neighborhood growth through strategic real estate development and a focus on building community assets.   Combining the strength, history and expertise of two impactful nonprofit agencies – Olneyville Housing Corporation & Community Works Rhode Island – ONE|NB continues the work of community revitalization in Providence, RI.  To date, ONE|NB has developed 366 affordable apartments, more than 115 for-sale homes, and 50,000+ square feet of commercial and community space that provide amenities and job opportunities in our neighborhoods.

The Audrey Street event takes place during Our Homes, Our Voices: National Housing Week of Action (July 22-29) a time when advocates across the country are holding events to raise awareness and ask Congress to lift spending caps and expand, not reduce, federal funding for proven HUD and USDA programs, to help low income families afford a place to call home.
