State Arts Council Announces Late Summer Show at Block Island Airport Gallery

Providence, RI – The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) announced today that a new art exhibition of works by Neal T. Walsh is on exhibit from July 25 through September 21, 2017 at the Block Island Airport Gallery. The Block Island Airport Gallery presents the work of contemporary Rhode Island artists in quarterly exhibitions.

Neal T. Walsh’s paintings are grounded in the landscape, abstract but made from observation of real phenomenal experiences of light and color in the urban and rural environment. Walking every day, Walsh finds inspiration in the interplay of light and color; the fleeting, peeling and faded. His paintings offer a humble, worn beauty that may dissolve with the slightest change of perspective. His technique uses salvaged, reclaimed and repurposed canvases which are then worked both additively with dry pigment, oil and wax, and subtractively using sanding, wiping, and gouging techniques. He seeks to summon forth possible hidden color relations, striving to pull out the right amount in the right gesture to create a work that resonates with a small bit of beauty.

Artist and curator, Walsh is the Gallery Director for the Providence arts organization AS220. Recent exhibition credits include the RISD Museum’s Locally Made exhibition, the group exhibition We Don’t Make Mistakes at the Chazan Gallery and co-curated with Maya Allison, and  Among the Breakage: New painting from Providence at the David Winton Bell Gallery. Additionally, Walsh was curator of NIGHTVISIONS, a series of experimental site-specific films and performances for the City of Providence.

Exhibitors for the Block Island Airport Gallery’s 2017 season were selected by juror Catherine Little Bert; art historian, owner and curator of Bert Gallery in Providence. The Block Island Airport Gallery, a partnership between the Rhode Island Council on the Arts and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, promotes outstanding work by artists living and working in Rhode Island.  The gallery will present art to an ever-changing audience of local, national and international travelers.
